Sembuwaththa Lake also known as Sembuwatta Wewa is a beautiful man made lake and a attractive tourist destination.

It is situated at Elkaduwa tea plantation in Matale district. The lake is situated 25km from the main road. While driving up the hill,you are ushered in by Campbell’s lane Forest reserve to the pristine location.Even though the lake is man made, it is quite the spectacle of unique land formations as it blends to its surrounding natural environment.

The lake is said be a staggering 30 to 40 feet. While you cannot swim in the lake, a natural spring, which is the water catchment area of the lake, is located nearby where you can swim after hiking up the hill.  Even though Bird watching and spotting has not been developed to a full fledged event yet but you can easily compete with your imagination as the birds play merry with the unique skyline. Although you will be required to pay unlike other lake regions in the country, Lake Sembuwaththa has more to offer more than you can bargain for. It is by far the best composition of manmade feature fitting perfectly into the natural environment.

While hiking to a lake for a leisure walk may not be in your bucket list, leisure walk around the lake should certainly be. The reason being, the natural grounds as well as other man made features in the area make it possible. This include features such as the Hunnas waterfall. The water is quite the view in the area as you make your way to the lake. The ambient sound of water is quite relaxing as you view the natural magnificence.

If a leisure walking isn’t enough, you can hike to the nearby knuckles mountain range. The mountain range can also be viewed from the lake side as you enjoy the cold breeze in the region. Lake Sembuwaththa  offers the best view of the most sacred Buddhist shrine in the earth, Sri Dalada Maligawa which is visible from the lake’s shores with a striking view of the shrine. Standing at this location, you can’t help  but get lost in the calm and serene environment.

While enjoying the view, the economic activity of the region will fascinate you as well. The Loolecondera tea estate and the host Elkaduwa tea plantation is possibly the most satisfying view of human settlement. Water from the lake is used for producing electricity for surrounding villages .  Hanthana mountain range contributes to this scenic view as it spreads into the horizon. While this might sound as too much to fit a three sixty view, mount Ambuluwawa completes the scenery on a high note to make the perfect tourist attraction site. Lake Sembuwaththa is the ultimate manmade lake that has been constructed in the most scenic environment as if to mock the natural placement of water bodies and urban way of life. The lake provides tourists with a life time experience of ambience, tranquility, serenity and calm.
